![]() There are some amazingly photorealistic sequences throughout, made all the more genuine-feeling by the toon's Cin¿ma V¿rit¿ style. The animation here is often breathtaking. Only Chicken Joe outstays his welcome, making for a rather one-note stoner/surfer dude. While the gist of its plot seems like a retread of last summer's Cars, these characters are endearing and comical enough to make one overlook that. ![]() Surf's Up may be the umpteenth family movie featuring penguins, but its mockumentary approach and mix of yuks and heart make it a better-than-expected entry in the glutted marketplace of computer-animated cartoons. Cody, meanwhile, helps coax Geek out of his self-imposed exile. Cody mistakes winning for admiration and respect, but Geek helps teach Cody not only how to be a better surfer but also about the meaning of being a true winner. The heart of the story revolves around the relationship forged between the up-and-coming Cody and Geek (voiced by Jeff Bridges), a washed-up old surfer and hermit. ![]() ![]() Once he reaches Pen Gu Island, Cody encounters famous surf promoter Reggie Belafonte (voiced by James Woods) and fearsome surfing champ Tank Evans (voiced by Diedrich Bader), and falls for the lovely lifeguard Lani Aliikai (Zooey Deschanel). After winning over hard-to-please surf talent scout Mikey Abromowitz (voiced by Mario Cantone), Cody befriends a fellow surfer, Chicken Joe (voiced by Jon Heder) from Sheboygan. Tracked by a documentary film crew, Cody leaves behind his mother and overbearing big brother to go to the idyllic Pen Gu Island for the Big Z Memorial Surf Off. ![]()
